A Beginner's Guide to White & Private Label Marketing

February 4, 2021
The Difference Between White labeling and Private Labeling.
White labeling
White labeling is a common term used when a product is manufactured and sold to many retailers. The formula, pattern or design is the exact same for everyone. All unique selling propositions are achieved through marketing.
Private Labeling
A private label product is usually manufactured specifically for a particular retailer and in some cases, the retailer may own the formula. This form of marketing has an advantage; only one retailer has the formula, design or pattern. The owner of a private label brand has the advantage of being able to change the formula or design.
The Advantages of Private and White Labeling
The big advantage of private and white labeling is that you don’t have to expend the capital it takes to actually get involved in the manufacturing of the product. You don’t have to buy extra real estate or equipment. You don’t have to hire a chemist for formulator. You don’t have to hire employees. All of the headaches that you can think of regarding the production of a product are eliminated. Your major responsibility with the manufacturer will lie in making sure that the quality of the product is up to your standard; that the manufacturer that you choose has a good track record for the delivery and is going to be in business for a long time. The rest of your responsibility will be in sales and marketing.
Private labeling is going bring certain privileges that white labeling won’t. For example, you may own the formula in a private legal arrangement so you can make changes. Also, your not in a tough spot if the manufacturer can’t deliver, all you have to do is find another manufacture. By the way, you should always have a backup manufacture. This is really important, because the consequences of not being able to continue production is devastating. I don’t care how secure your current manufacturing is, always have a backup or two.
How to Find a Manufacturer
The simple and most obvious way is to use Google. Just search for “private label manufacturers” or “private label suppliers” or “white label manufacturers.” Another way to find a manufacturer is to search for “forums, private label products.” When you find a forum, you can listen in on great conversations about manufacturer performance and more.
Finally, industry networking work wonders. You never know what resources will be exposed during a casual conversation. If you want to know who’s making your competitors product just start asking around.
